Below is an explanation of the primary processes utilized for the branding of promotional clothing and gift items. In the Pad Printing process an inked image is transferred from a photo-etched plate to a thick, soft silicone pad. Pad Printing is widely employed for printing plastic pens, memory sticks, water bottles and mugs, as well as many other plastic promotional items. In the Screen Printing process a screen is made up of a metal frame with a fine gauze tightly stretched over it. Ink is pushed through the screen by a squeegee and only transfers where the logo was burned. Screen Printing provides excellent coverage and is especially good for large and bold logos; it is widely employed for printing bags, folders, umbrellas and t-shirts. Laser Engraving allows logos to be replicated with precise accuracy and is widely employed to brand metal pens, metal mugs, metal keyrings and knives. Embroidery is mostly used on clothing items, caps, scarves, beanies, table cloths and certain types of promotional bags and folders where the fabric allows the needle and thread of embroidery machines to easily pass through it. An iron-on/ heat transfer consists of an image printed in reverse and applied to a piece of high release paper. The image is usually printed onto plasitol, foil, flock or CAD-cut vinyl with plastisol inks which have the characteristics of being flexible enough for stretching and durable enough for wear ability. The transfer is typically used for decorative purposes and applied to garments, mugs, mouse pads, and other surfaces. The image is applied to these items using a heat press machine which uses high temperature (typically 195 degrees Celsius) and pressure to transfer the ink from the paper to the garment. The dye sublimation process consists of printing a special sublimation ink through a specific printer and onto a sublimation transfer sheet. By using a heat process the sublimation ink can be transferred onto a variety of substrates such as t-shirts, mugs, coasters, mouse pads, plaques and many more. The sublimation process is different than standard ink transfers because instead of using a carrier sheet to take the ink over to the shirt or item, sublimation ink actually becomes a part of the item. Dye sublimation ink is transformed into a gas when heated at a high temperature. The transfer process works by using a heat press and pressure to heat the transfer on top of the item. The heat not only releases the gas from the ink but it also opens up the pores of the polyester, polymer, or polymer coated item which then allows the gas to enter. When the heat press is lifted and the temperature cools the sublimation ink turns back into a solid form and the pores close permanently encapsulating the ink within the polymer. Clothing material need to be 100% polyester and other items need to be coated with a polymer coating to accept the sublimation ink.
