The San Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert are considered Namibia’s first people but they have no homeland. They moved around following the migratory patterns of animals. Near Grootfontein, a farmer found a chunk of metal in his soil in 1920, completely unaware that he just found Namibia’s next national monument. Scientists soon gathered around to inspect the object and identified it as a meteorite. There is no crater surrounding the meteorite which suggests that it fell to earth at a much lower rate than expected. You can find the Dragon’s Breath Cave 330 feet below the surface of the farm Hariseb in the Otjozondjupa Region of Namibia. No one knew about its existence until 1986 when South African speleologists discovered it. It is called the Dragon’s Breath Cave due to the humid air rushing to the surface. When you explore this cave, you’ll find the world’s largest underground lake. The surface of this lake stretches 4.9 acres and the depth is understandably unknown. Namibia is home to the biggest Cheetah population in the world. The Etosha National Park is the home of Africa’s tallest elephants, endangered black rhino and 91 other animal species. The largest conservation area in Namibia is the Namib-Naukluft Park and this park is also considered one of the largest in the world. This may all be lovely but the reality is that the cheetahs are under pressure from farming and ranching encroaching on their natural habitat. It is millions of years old, making it the world’s oldest desert. Sossusvlei is perfect for those seeking extreme adventure. This desert boasts some of the world’s tallest sand dunes.
