Ian has substantial experience in corporate and commercial transactions in addition to commercial litigation. He represents clients in a wide range of matters, both locally and internationally. Approximately three months after being admitted as an attorney, Ian commenced practicing for his own account and at that stage he was one of the youngest attorneys (with his further tax qualifications) practicing for his own account in Johannesburg if not the country. Michael Strauss joined the Department of Justice in 2004 as a Judges Registrar at the then Johannesburg High Court, shortly whereafter he was admitted as an Advocate in the same division. He joined Ian Levitt Attorneys in 2006 and was admitted to the side bar as an attorney in He has a BA (Law) Degree from the University of Stellenbosch and a LLB degree from the Rand Afrikaans University. Michael specializes in both commercial and criminal litigation, and has been involved in various high profile matters on both a national and international scale. His experience in criminal litigation includes criminal trials, urgent applications, extraditions, criminal appeals and all other aspects relating to criminal law. Civilly, Michael acts for a host of public companies and renders a wide variety of legal services to them, including but not limited to civil litigation, civil appeals, drafting of commercial contracts, customs and excise related issues and liquidations. He has appeared in the Supreme Court of appeal on a number of occasions. Michael has established very close ties with the Chinese community in South Africa, which client base now constitutes 50% of his practice. As a result thereof, he has been greatly involved in the negotiation, facilitation and drafting of mining, oil & gas and commodity contracts. After extensive traveling, he was admitted as an attorney in Pieter specializes in criminal matters, and has extensive expertise in this field, having done trials ranging from murder to possession of dagga and more bail applications than he can remember. He has turned down a position as a magistrate, which would have made him one of the youngest magistrates in the country, because of his love of the cut and thrust of litigation. Pieter also excels at other contentious matters, including family law, divorce matters and commercial litigation. His easygoing demeanor often leads his opponents to underestimate him, although they soon find out that he has a will of steel when it come to the interests of his clients.
