What you should know about Counselling Psychologist Lauren Moss
Working for Open Disclosure allowed me the privilege of working with amazing women who had endured the pain of sexual abuse. Working with sexual abuse survivors encouraged me to want to further understand the psychological impact sexual abuse and rape has on a woman. This interest culminated in both Masters and Doctoral research into the psychological impact of rape. My intention is to contribute to the existing body of knowledge regarding the therapeutic treatment of sexual abuse survivors. In 2008, the student counselling centre expanded it services to include psychological services offered to the public. This project has further grown my interest and experience in working with trauma. Providing peer supervision as well as supervision for Masters students during their practical placements and supervision for tailor made internships of both Registered Counsellors and Counselling Psychologist interns. Psychological services include psychotherapy for individual adults, adolescents and children, couples counselling, psychometric assessment, group therapy and process facilitation. Psychotherapy, in my view, is the unique and safe space where a client can bring their own understanding of themselves and their world, and the professional therapist can bring their understanding of their world and the learned knowledge of how people behave. Together the client and the therapist can jointly unpack the client’s particular difficulty and create a safe space where this difficulty can be better understood, and in doing so a new perspective gained which hopefully holds the solution or answers to the problem at hand. Psychotherapy allows a person to tell their unique story in safe and non-judgmental environment. The aim of this story telling is to allow for the client to re-author this story with a different and hopefully better outcome. Past successes and traumas can leave impressions on our self-concept, which we carry from childhood into our adult lives. However, no matter what the past holds, it is how we think, feel and act in the present that is important. The past can be thought of like the dictionary that helps us to interpret the present. Therapy merely facilitates this process and in most cases speeds up healing and recovery.
